The Mysterious Affair at Styles by Agatha Christie
Exhilarating. Thought-provoking, and certainly mysterious.
Reading The Mysterious Affair at Styles was immensely thrilling and enjoyable to read. And it is most certainly thought provoking as I go along with Mr Hastings and the Belgian Detective, Hercule Poirot, to discover who and how the victim was poisoned.
Agatha Christie has cleverly weaved in clues and plot twists, which completely threw me off my suspicions and my deduction- you can ask a woman who was holding her baby in the sitting area of the hospital, how utterly astonished and exasperated I was upon discovering who the murderer was and how my deductions has been somehow incorrect. I am not joking, I am quite serious when I say that I had closed the book dramatically and heaved a noisy sigh, attracting her attention. Upon realising her attention was on me, I hid my face in the book.
It has been such a wonderful read, creating my own deductions and seeing if I was correct in uncovering the true murderer.
The story is about a woman, who acts as a benefactress to her stepchildren, providing them with attention and allowances, but a mysterious case of poisoning had taken place at a place called Styles, which Hastings (who happen to be taking a vacation at Styles) and Poirot embark to investigate and uncover the murderer, interrogating many of their suspects.
So many suspects and clues, it was very intriguing to decide who the murderer is and to watch the story unfold, to reveal the murderer.
It was really nice to have an additional chapter of the original, unpublished ending of the novel included in the book. I got to read the original ending of the novel and the finalised, published ending of the novel that was used instead of the original; and I got to see how the original ending was developed and improved to become the published ending.
I quite enjoy Agatha Christie’s detective stories- I find them quite entrancing and exhilarating because of the plot twists embedded and how cleverly written the novel is.
